In the New York Senate, a law was enacted banning prosecutors from utilizing lyrics from rappers' songs as evidence against them in criminal trials.
The bill is now on its way to the state legislature, where it will become law if it passes.
Senate Bill S7527 ("Rap Music on Trial") passed by a vote of 38 to 23.
"The admissibility of evidence of a defendant's creative or artistic expression against such defendant in a criminal trial is limited," according to the law.
People obtained a letter signed by Jay-Z, Meek Mill, Killer Mike, Big Sean, Kelly Rowland, Robin Thicke, Fat Joe, and Yo Gotti, which was delivered to lawmakers by Jay Z's Roc attorney Alex Spiro and University of Richmond Professor Erik Nielson earlier this year.
